The Swallow aka Save Our Souls

Item details

The Swallow a.k.a. Save Our Souls is a vibrant mural created by David "Meggs" Hooke and is located at 1 Rowland St. in North Beach. The mural references both tattoo culture and illustration that has influenced David. Traditionally, sailor tattoos using the swallow image represent safe passage and time spent at sea. David considers this wall as his homage to the maritime tattoo culture of the Bay Area and also represents fond memories of San Francisco, his home away from home.

Meet the Creator

I am on a constant journey to explore the beauty between order & chaos, simplicity & abstraction.

David ‘MEGGS’ Hooke is one of Australia’s most progressive and accomplished street and fine artists. MEGGS is recognized globally for his unique, expressive, and energetic style with references to pop-culture, the natural world, and socio-cultural issues. His technical use of color and movement combines clean, bold, illustrative elements with intuitive, textural, and free flowing design. By constantly searching for the harmony between form and abstraction, MEGGS pours his all-or-nothing personality into every inch of his work.

Adapting his street art to fine art has granted MEGGS extensive opportunities to travel, professionally exhibit his work, and paint murals around the globe. His street and gallery works are recognized nationally and internationally, in places such as Hong Kong, Sydney, London, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico, New Zealand, California, Texas, Michigan, and Hawai‘i. MEGGS’ artworks are included in the permanent paper collections of the National Gallery of Australia and the Victoria & Albert Museum of London. His paintings may also be viewed in the permanent collections of the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster, California and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

MEGGS has 10+ years of professional experience producing public art and has spent the past four years working within the USA on several large-scale mural projects, coordinating gallery exhibitions, and volunteering with public organizations and private entities. MEGGS contributes his time and art to support the ambitions of numerous not-for-profit organizations, including PangeaSeed, Pow! Wow! Worldwide and UVSC. His cooperative practices have led to collaborations with various artists and brands internationally, such as Nike, Stussy, Addict, New Balance, Raised By Wolves, Burton, Sector 9 Skateboards, and Endeavor Snowboards.

MEGGS’ collective experiences have contributed to the constant evolution of his talent and have furthered his range of designs and ideas. One of his most rewarding experiences as a professional artist is engaging with the public and discovering people who share his view that art is an international language and a universal avenue for the free expression of creative ideas.
