Last spring I was hired by Latela Curatorial to propose work to live in the lobby of a clubhouse in a new development for a client. The space was unique in that it had 30 foot ceilings and there would be seating in the center of the narrow long room. The client's vision had begun with a large rope chandelier. Marta knew I worked in fiber and asked me to come up with some options. I proposed four concepts with sketches and stories that would invite people into the space and draw their eyes upward and soften the spaces edges and angles.

We arrived at this work - a seven panel fiber piece I named "Sky Windows". The panels range from 7 feet long to almost 12 and almost 3 feet wide. I wanted the pieces to tell a visual story bringing in the natural landscape and soft shapes of the beautiful coastline and marshland into the space and activate the space overhead. Combining techniques of stitching and weaving, the panels have sections that allow for light to pass through and layer visually in front of one another. The panels were expertly installed by an install team and suspended from the ceiling at different pre-determined locations to ensure that they felt cohesive but also allowed for visual movement. From every angle, the landscape holds a new composition and moves with the viewer.

This was a dream project and I loved creating it from start to finish. I love working large. The highlight of course is to work with and for incredible partners and now to know that it's bringing joy and peace to the space and people who live and interact there. It's such an incredible honor to be able to create work like this and get to share it with the world.

Meditative mixed media fiber art guided by breath

Filiz Soyak is an interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of identity, memory, and time through painting, drawing, clay, fiber, and installation. After becoming a mother in 2016, her work turned further inward seeking meaning through stillness and by connecting to her intuition. Meditation and breath have become integral practices in her work.
Filiz was born in 1979 in Belgium to a Turkish father and Swedish mother. She spent most of her childhood in Belgium and Japan, before moving to the Northeast of the United States. Filiz found her comfort in creating early on, and art became the language that allowed her to process and adapt to so many different experiences.
Filiz earned a B.A. in Visual Art from the University of Vermont in 2001, followed by an M.Ed. in Visual Art Education from Lesley University in 2008. From 2004-2008 Filiz was a full-time resident and an active community member of the historical Fort Point Arts Community in Boston, Massachusetts. After spending a year in Amman, Jordan, then another year in Barbados, teaching art and design, Filiz landed in Brooklyn, New York in 2010. In 2017 she moved with her husband and young daughter from Brooklyn, to Hudson, New York to be closer to nature and to establish a slower, more grounded and conscious lifestyle.
