While in Venice, Italy during an artist's residency in 2015, Michael meticulously filled a sketchbook with delicate pen and ink drawings created during his explorations on foot through the city’s labyrinthine streets. Upon returning to his home studio, he began the process of transforming these intimate, small-scale sketches into a compelling series of ambitious intaglio monoprints. Each of these intensely colored prints stands as a singular work of art, unique in both composition and imagery. Michael employs a complex monoprinting technique that involves the use of multiple plates and incorporates a full spectrum of intaglio methods, including aquatint, drypoint, engraving, as well as both soft and hard ground etching, resulting in a rich layering of texture and depth.
