The Handmade Story is a South African lighting and décor studio based in Nottingham Road, KZN, where we design calm, contemporary pieces
using our signature hand-rolled clay beads, each one “perfectly imperfect,” carrying the fingerprints of the women who made it.

Our upliftment work is simple and human: we send clay into nearby rural communities, women roll beads at home (even from bed when unwell), we buy them back, then kiln-fire them to over 1100°C before assembling every piece in our factory, beautiful designs that also creates dignified income.

We’re UL certified (also CE & ERAC), so our lighting is ready for projects worldwide, and we ship with the packing and paperwork experience international clients need.
Over the years we’ve worked with wonderful global brands and designers, and our pieces now live in homes around the world;
retail partners supplied include Banana Republic, RH BCT, Arhaus, Klaylife, and SARZA.
Custom designs, sizing, finishes, and trade support are available on request.
