Riverside Roundabout: “Faces of Elysian Valley” - Sculptures
Featured In Riverside Drive Bridge over Los Angeles River and Ave 20, Los Angeles, CA, Glendale, CA
Nine Stone sculptures are cut with 3D scanned faces of individuals from the surrounding community. The sculptures are sited in a remediative native landscape typical to adjacent LA River. Curb cuts in the roundabout convey stormwater coming from the bridge through a series of stormwater detention landscapes, thus intercepting runoff before it dumps into the LA River. Each series of 3 sculptures are cut from one block of stone using a technique similar to Russian nesting dolls. All “off-cuts” (typically waste) material has been arrayed in the outer ring as a boundary. The hollow inverted faces give the illusion of following you and provide an interactive experience as one goes around the roundabout, with no maintenance
