Hand-knotted in high-quality wool, this 3x6 Modern Classics rug by Rug & Kilim is directly inspired by the rich history of antique Chinese Art Deco rugs and similar Chinoiserie designs from the iconic movement of the same name in the 1920s.

On the Design:

This exquisite rug is a vibrant dialogue between the bold geometry of Art Deco and the lyrical symbolism of classic Chinese motifs, as well as an exemplary use of the open field design seldom seen in most other classic rugs. The central negative space is defined by a beautifully saturated hue of bronze brown with amber gold accents that sits gorgeously underfoot, providing a stunning, luminous canvas for minimal decoration.

In each corner, sophisticated cloudband and floral scroll motifs in ice blue and black float gracefully, underscoring a play of color that emphasizes the spandrels. The entire composition is contained by a striking, continuous Greek Key border rendered in deep navy blue, which introduces a powerful, graphic repetition. Admirers of the craft will note the particular emphasis on these stylized motifs—long-celebrated symbols found in period pieces that inspired this design. Altogether, it is a deeply personal homage to a rich history of craft and culture, translating antique elegance into a distinguished contemporary piece.

A Legacy of Excellence Since the Beginning

Rug & Kilim is a New York–based institution devoted to the art of rugs, kilims, and tapestries. Founded in 1980 by Jahanshah “Josh” Nazmiyal, we began as a humble family workshop and have grown into one of the most respected authorities in the field—without ever losing the intimacy and integrity that define our boutique ethos. For over four decades, we’ve served collectors, designers, and connoisseurs who value craftsmanship, soul, and above all, rarity.

In 1989, Rug & Kilim celebrated a major milestone with the opening of its second store in Morristown, New Jersey. The business quickly established itself as a national source for the finest Oriental rugs, offering a wide-ranging collection from Persia, Tibet, India, Pakistan, Russia, and China. Known for its expertise, curated selection, and exceptional customer service, Rug & Kilim became synonymous with quality, integrity, and a deep understanding of color and design. The firm’s commitment to placing rare and distinguished pieces in homes and collections across the country has remained at the heart of its philosophy for decades.
