The Sherman is a travertine and oak side table, a compact, self-contained table built around a single block of travertine. Stone and timber are set in deliberate balance here, the travertine carrying the surface and the oak grounding it beneath.
Roman travertine is the stone of ancient Rome, formed in the mineral springs around Tivoli and used across the Colosseum and the colonnades of St Peter's Square. It carries a soft, creamy beige tone, its delicate linear veining and gently layered structure warmer and more understated than the marbles. The base answers in solid European oak, its honey-toned, open grain warming to the stone above so the travertine and oak settle into a single, considered pairing. Each top is cut from its own block, so no two of these travertine and oak side tables share the same figure.
Underneath, a solid oak base carries the weight. Two boards are set perpendicular and slotted one through the other into an interlocking cross-leg structure, the join shown rather than hidden, so the craft of the piece and the support of it are one and the same.
As a travertine and oak side table it holds a room quietly, as at ease beside a sofa or a favourite chair as anywhere. The Sherman is an Italian side table made to order in Cantù, in Lombardy's long-established furniture district, drawn from a palette of full-slab stone, solid timber, and premium Italian glass.
