The Rakis Mirror is a sculptural ceramic wall mirror by UK-based ceramicist Catalin Filip — a functional object that carries the formal logic and material presence of the Rakis series into mirror form. The black vulcan stoneware frame is built around the same central-stem tension: curves pushed toward collapse, dried quickly, fixed permanently in ridged stoneware. Sculpture that also reflects.
Each Rakis piece is built around a central vertical stem, its curves pushed toward collapse before being dried quickly to preserve the movement of the clay. The result holds at the threshold — strength and fragility occupying the same form, neither resolving the other.
The exterior carries the raw, textured natural finish of the stoneware — dark, granular, honest. It meets the high-clarity mirror glass directly, the contrast between rough ceramic and reflective surface carrying more weight than any applied ornament would.
The Rakis Mirror suits residential interiors, boutique hotel environments, and architectural spaces. Designed for indoor, climate-controlled use. Wall-mounting hardware is included.
Catalin Filip is a self-taught ceramicist and designer based on the south coast of England. Born in Romania, he came to clay through a background in architecture, developing an experimental practice that lets the material — and gravity — take the lead.

A self-taught ceramicist who bends, pulls, and stretches raw clay — capturing the movement of natural forces in stone-like, functional sculpture.

Cătălin Filip (b. 1989) is a Romanian-born, UK-based artist and designer specialising in ceramic art. Growing up in post-communist Romania, he experienced a time of creative tension: newfound freedoms allowed for artistic expression, but limited resources compelled artists to be inventive. This environment fostered a spirit of experimentation and a deep appreciation for alternative processes that continues to define his practice.
Filip makes sculptural ceramic lamps and object installations inspired by the natural responses of raw clay to forces such as gravity. By bending, pulling, and stretching the material, he captures the fluidity and movement of clay, transforming it into stone-like finished forms. His work echoes the organic distortions found in nature — carved hills, wind-bent trees, the dynamic forces that shape the world. Each piece retains traces of its own making.
A self-taught ceramicist, he approaches clay as a medium for discovery, developing techniques through patient trial and error. His background in architecture adds a complementary focus on structure and design, enabling him to create work that balances artistic expression with functional purpose. Since moving to the UK in 2014 he has settled in St Leonards-on-Sea on the south coast of England. His work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations in the Netherlands, Romania, Greece, and Mexico, and at the British Ceramics Biennale, where he received the Fresh Talent Prize. He has been named an Emerging Artist by Ceramic Review (2023) and featured in Elle Decoration, House & Garden, and We The Cool Magazine.
