The Rakis Floor Lamp is a large-scale sculptural ceramic floor lamp by UK-based ceramicist Catalin Filip — standing 1.2 metres tall, composed of three stacking ceramic sections, each ridged and shaped by the same logic of near-collapse that defines the Rakis series. It occupies a room with quiet, material authority.
Each Rakis piece is built around a central vertical stem, its curves pushed toward collapse before being dried quickly to preserve the movement of the clay. The result holds at the threshold — strength and fragility occupying the same form, neither resolving the other.
The exterior carries the raw, textured natural finish of the stoneware — dark and granular, with the honest character of material that has not been smoothed away. Inside, an antique white glaze reflects warmth from the aperture, casting soft, directional ambient light.
The Rakis Floor Lamp suits residential living rooms, boutique commercial interiors, and gallery environments. The three ceramic sections stack together and can be transported separately. Compatible with 110–130V and 220–230V systems.
Catalin Filip (b. 1989) is a Romanian-born, UK-based ceramicist and designer who develops his techniques through intuitive experimentation and trial and error. Self-taught in clay, he brings an architectural eye to functional sculpture — making objects that balance process and purpose.

A self-taught ceramicist who bends, pulls, and stretches raw clay — capturing the movement of natural forces in stone-like, functional sculpture.

Cătălin Filip (b. 1989) is a Romanian-born, UK-based artist and designer specialising in ceramic art. Growing up in post-communist Romania, he experienced a time of creative tension: newfound freedoms allowed for artistic expression, but limited resources compelled artists to be inventive. This environment fostered a spirit of experimentation and a deep appreciation for alternative processes that continues to define his practice.
Filip makes sculptural ceramic lamps and object installations inspired by the natural responses of raw clay to forces such as gravity. By bending, pulling, and stretching the material, he captures the fluidity and movement of clay, transforming it into stone-like finished forms. His work echoes the organic distortions found in nature — carved hills, wind-bent trees, the dynamic forces that shape the world. Each piece retains traces of its own making.
A self-taught ceramicist, he approaches clay as a medium for discovery, developing techniques through patient trial and error. His background in architecture adds a complementary focus on structure and design, enabling him to create work that balances artistic expression with functional purpose. Since moving to the UK in 2014 he has settled in St Leonards-on-Sea on the south coast of England. His work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations in the Netherlands, Romania, Greece, and Mexico, and at the British Ceramics Biennale, where he received the Fresh Talent Prize. He has been named an Emerging Artist by Ceramic Review (2023) and featured in Elle Decoration, House & Garden, and We The Cool Magazine.
