The inspiration behind this candlestick design comes from astronomy. Pulsars, known as the 'lighthouses' of the universe, are rotating neutron stars that emit focused beams of electromagnetic radiation from their magnetic poles. A simplified diagram of this phenomenon shows a sphere emitting two cones, the same shape as the candlestick.

Each candlestick is handmade from forged steel components, and polished to highlight the surface texture inherited from the intense heat of the forging process. This raw aesthetic gives each piece a unique fingerprint, an uncommon feature in most contemporary designs.

Connor Holland is an independent designer maker who creates unique products and furniture in his contemporary studio workshop. His futuristic style takes inspiration from the optimistic, space age vision of the 21st century as seen in retro science fiction, combined with an ambitious creativity and desire to challenge convention.

Since graduating from Kingston University’s Product Design course, he has continued to follow the ethos of ‘Thinking through Making’. As a result, the sculptural forms of his designs evolve through constant experimentation with materials, and by pushing the boundaries of manufacturing techniques. He is best known for his work with inflated sheet metal, and the ongoing refinement of the Hydroforming and Aeroforming processes, sharing his results with millions of viewers online.

Connor’s positive view of the future results in an increased awareness of ecological impact. With sustainability in mind, every design is hand made and built to last with a keen attention to detail. His designs utilise the strength, durability and versatility of metal, ensuring that each piece can be refurbished in the decades to come, and finally recycled at the end of their usable life.
