Artist and furniture maker Peter Sandback has introduced a new collection of tables for 2021 Sandback has developed a process of inlaying everyday nails into the wood tops of his tables. The nails, when cut flush and polished create often elaborate patterns of silver dots. The result is a line of tables that are modern in form, but decorated with beautiful and complex patterns. The tables are laboriously inlayed with as many as 11,000 nails of various diameters. Sandback’s patterns are influenced by Japanese katagami fabric stencils and a 19th century fabric pattern production technique called picotage. Peter Sandback received his Master of Fine Arts degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has been making furniture one table at a time for 25 years. All wood used to produce these tables is Forest Stewardship Council certified. Please see the attached video links for further information on the artist and his techniques.

Handmade tables inlaid with hundreds, even thousands of nails of various diameters

I have been making furniture in my rural New Hampshire shop one at a time, by hand for 25 years.
My more recent work involves inlaying regular;ar old construction nails in my table surfaces. The nails are cut flush with the table surface and polished. The resulting effect is a pattern of shiny dots of various diameters. My patterns come from many sources. A favorite is very old hand cut Japanese stencils used for kimono fabric, called katagami.
