The Concept
This Southern Official Hat Armchair Trio (the "Wenyi" or Scholar’s Chair) represents a masterly evolution of Ming Dynasty aesthetics. Designers Yuchen and Judy performed an archaeological study of classical archives to refine this silhouette, balancing scholarly rigor with contemporary sculptural grace. This set is designed for the private studio—a sanctuary of intellectual power that moves beyond the rigid palace style toward a more fluid, modern elegance.
The Craft & Material
Entirely handcrafted using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, this piece explores a stylistic dialogue between the refined silhouettes of the Ming Dynasty literati and the evocative spirit of Western masters such as Van Gogh and Monet. We invite you to further experience this cross-cultural harmony through our Suzhou Embroidery collection, featuring exquisite interpretations of Impressionist masterpieces, also available in our studio.
The set is executed in Imperial Midnight Black-Gold Wood, a legendary timber of sink-in-water density that locks in the eternal value of a true heirloom. The visual character is defined by an extreme, obsidian-dark surface punctuated by cold, crystalline gold glimmers within the grain.
The backrest features a central inlay of rare, highly figured Burl Wood (Yingmu), framed by intricate openwork carvings of an Imperial Dragon amidst auspicious clouds. Structurally, this set features the elite "Four-Leg Continuous Timber” construction, where the legs are masterfully integrated from a single piece of wood for ultimate structural purity. Utilizing the "Pipe-Pot Tenon" joinery, the entire set is hand-joined without a single nail.
