The Melo Lamp is a handmade ceramic pendant light by UK-based ceramicist Catalin Filip — a stoneware form shaped by the slow pull of gravity on wet clay, suspended from a fabric braided cable and left to cast warm, diffused light through its cream speckled interior. Hung in a room, it settles in like something that was always meant to be there.
Each piece in the Melo collection begins as a simple cylinder of stoneware. Left to respond to gravity, the wet clay sags, folds, and settles into a form no drawing could have anticipated. Filip dries it quickly — at exactly the moment the material finds its shape — fixing the movement permanently into something stone-like and still.
The textured natural exterior holds the character of raw stoneware — matte, earth-toned, honest. Inside, a cream speckled glaze catches and diffuses warmth, casting soft pendant light that suits both task and ambient use.
The lamp hangs from a fabric braided cable and plugs directly into a ceiling socket, with adjustable height for task or ambient lighting. Hardwiring to a standard ceiling rose is equally simple. Compatible with 110–130V and 220–230V systems.
Catalin Filip makes sculptural ceramic lamps and objects from his studio in St Leonards-on-Sea, UK. Romanian-born and self-taught in ceramics, he bends, pulls, and stretches raw clay to capture the moment before it sets — a practice as much about listening to the material as shaping it.
