“Medusa” 4 x 11.5 x 19.5 inches. Colorado marble, Brazilian aquamarine, vintage black glass, and frame.
Few figures of classical mythology have found as prominent a place in our contemporary creative canon as Medusa. She was a priestess of Athena raped by Poseidon, and although not at fault, Athena punished her severely. She cursed her to be one of the three “Gorgons,” hideous creatures with snakes for hair, green skin, and eyes that turned mortals to stone.
The Medusa image has become an icon of feminine strength despite mistreatment, a haunting reminder of human injustice, and a complex object of intrigue and attraction. She brings to mind the old adage “hurt people hurt people” and has become a symbol in discussions of trauma and identity.
In my rendition she is both the innocent maiden and the monster. I wanted to show both her beauty and her disfigurement at once — serenity and horror sharing the same face.
Ive been working with combined materials for a few years now and love the visual impact. The finish came from a layered process of acid etching, sandblasting, and sanding - balancing erosion and refinement, much like her transformation itself.
