Knotto 01 is a sculptural ceramic desk lamp and table lamp by UK-based ceramicist Catalin Filip — a white stoneware form whose elongated, brutalist silhouette is defined as much by the bold orange cable binding it as by the clay itself. The cable cinches the body like a ratchet strap, pulling visible creases into the stoneware and making the tension between control and material the subject of the object.
The Knotto series introduces a different kind of tension: mechanical, visible, deliberate. An industrial braided cable — orange, insistent — binds the ceramic body like a ratchet strap, pulling the stoneware taut and pressing permanent creases into the surface. The constraint is the design.
The exterior stoneware is raw and textured; inside, a cream speckled glaze catches and holds warmth at the aperture. The cable is both structural and electrical — it binds the form and carries the current — so the logic of the object and its material are, unusually, one and the same.
Knotto 01 works as a collectible statement piece in residential and boutique commercial interiors, particularly in spaces that are comfortable with industrial references and honest material. Compatible with 110–130V and 220–230V systems.
Catalin Filip makes sculptural ceramic lamps and objects from his studio in St Leonards-on-Sea, UK. Romanian-born and self-taught in ceramics, he bends, pulls, and stretches raw clay to capture the moment before it sets — a practice as much about listening to the material as shaping it.

A self-taught ceramicist who bends, pulls, and stretches raw clay — capturing the movement of natural forces in stone-like, functional sculpture.

Cătălin Filip (b. 1989) is a Romanian-born, UK-based artist and designer specialising in ceramic art. Growing up in post-communist Romania, he experienced a time of creative tension: newfound freedoms allowed for artistic expression, but limited resources compelled artists to be inventive. This environment fostered a spirit of experimentation and a deep appreciation for alternative processes that continues to define his practice.
Filip makes sculptural ceramic lamps and object installations inspired by the natural responses of raw clay to forces such as gravity. By bending, pulling, and stretching the material, he captures the fluidity and movement of clay, transforming it into stone-like finished forms. His work echoes the organic distortions found in nature — carved hills, wind-bent trees, the dynamic forces that shape the world. Each piece retains traces of its own making.
A self-taught ceramicist, he approaches clay as a medium for discovery, developing techniques through patient trial and error. His background in architecture adds a complementary focus on structure and design, enabling him to create work that balances artistic expression with functional purpose. Since moving to the UK in 2014 he has settled in St Leonards-on-Sea on the south coast of England. His work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations in the Netherlands, Romania, Greece, and Mexico, and at the British Ceramics Biennale, where he received the Fresh Talent Prize. He has been named an Emerging Artist by Ceramic Review (2023) and featured in Elle Decoration, House & Garden, and We The Cool Magazine.
