Ionic columns were one of three types of column styles used in Greece; Vitruvius wrote of this design as "a suitable combination of the hardness of the Doric and the delicacy of the Corinthian." Two early examples of Ionic columns still stand in modern-day Turkey: the Temple of Hera on Samos and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The example you see is now on display in the British Museum.
