The Hover Bench creates a duality of effects. Its design places a visual emphasis on the top slab while still maintaining the overall box-like form. This is accomplished by having the sidewalls split from the top with thin cuts. Diagonal braces connect the sidewalls to the top, creating the load-bearing structure. The diagonal braces progress from small to large on one side and large to small on the other. It is made of thirteen-ply maple plywood.

Unlike commercial mass produced furniture, the Hover Bench is an art piece, “art you can sit on”. Like other Furbershaworks pieces they are made in the San Francisco Bay Area one at a time, painstakingly sanded, hand finished and assembled by their creator.

Gerard Furbershaw cofounded Lunar Design in 1984. Lunar quickly established itself as a design firm that was highly regarded by clients, employees and the design community. Over his 30+ years at Lunar, the firm won over three hundred design awards and its work was featured in over twenty museum exhibitions, including the esteemed MOMA and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. In 2014 Lunar was awarded the prestigious Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum’s National Design Award for its thirty-year body of work. Gerard was also selected as the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture 2012 Distinguished Alumnus.

During his time at Lunar, he experienced the tremendous impact design has in making companies successful and providing well designed products to the masses. He launched Furbershaworks in 2019 as a platform for his work in the art furniture domain. In shifting from designer to artist, his focus also shifted from addressing the many attributes required in a successful industrial design solution to simply beauty. The name Furbershaworks reflects his drive to create works and also the effort (the work) associated with that process. As a designer he sought to positively impact society with beneficial products. As an artist, he now seeks to leave a legacy of aesthetic enrichment through his art furniture.

Over his four decades as a designer in the San Francisco Bay Area, saw the region evolve from a tech centric hub to one of the world’s design meccas. All of his pieces are created and made within this inspiring and invigorating backdrop via a rigorous process using computer aided design, laser cut scale models, computer numerically controlled machining as well as being finished with TLC.
