Unveiling the Imperial Throne of Scholarly Integrity: A Limited-Edition Ming Dynasty Great Grand Master's Armchair Set
Experience the unparalleled precise architecture of the Ming Dynasty. A timeless legacy, reimagined as a definitive centerpiece to ground your living space.
The Dynasty Artisan Vision
Born from Greg’s obsession with ancient Ming Dynasty scrolls and Judy’s vision for timeless elegance, Dynasty Artisan bridges the gap between Eastern heritage and the modern Western home. In our Westborough, MA studio, we translate seven millennia of craftsmanship into a living sanctuary, ensuring every 'Imperial Cinnabar Ironwood' piece serves as a timeless bridge between the soul of the past and the dignity of your home.
The Concept
Inspired by legendary collections of classical Chinese furniture and specifically based on a particular four-headed yokeback armchair from the renowned Zhang Dexiang collection, this Great Grand Master's Armchair Set (Trio) represents a masterly evolution of Eastern aesthetics. This set is designed to anchor modern Western executive or sophisticated living spaces through a strategic "Aesthetic Conflict"—using the warmth, upright lines, and structural purity of the Ming form to provide a profound counterpoint to the cold stone and industrial minimalism of contemporary environments. This particular design, based on a significant piece once featured on a book cover and highly valued at auction, commands attention as a work of historical and aesthetic stature.
The Craft and Material
Cinnabar soul in an iron-clad body. This 'Imperial Cinnabar Ironwood' possesses a legendary heartwood density that sinks instantly in water—a physical testament to its iron-like strength and eternal durability. Bathed in the sacred crimson glow of ancient Ming Dynasty altars, its deep, radiant hues offer an unparalleled aesthetic of scholarly dignity and the enduring weight of history.
The Details and Engineering
The Details: Features an intricate three-part backsplat composition: the top section with traditional carved Bogus Dragon motifs; the middle section featuring rare, highly figured burr wood inlay; and the lower section as a bright-legged backsplat with an openwork aproned foot. The specific dimensions of this armchair, larger than conventional models, are based on traditional Southern Chinese ('Su-zuo') geometry with enhanced scale.
The Ergonomics: The precise "S" curve of the backrest is engineered to follow the classical rules of human spinal ergonomics for supreme seating comfort (see IMG_2208.jpg).
The Engineering: Employs the challenging "Four Legs from One Timber" technique, requiring flawless, large-scale material to ensure absolute structural and visual continuity.
The Structure: 100% handcrafted using traditional nail-free mortise and tenon joinery. Every ratio, such as the distance of the toprail protrusion, is precisely controlled.

A similar design, utilizing rare nanmu burr wood inlays.
Artisan Note
As a bespoke work created using high-density natural materials and traditional hand tools, each piece possesses a singular character. The unique grain patterns and hand-carved nuances are the fingerprints of the artisan. Please note that the luster of the wood may shift in tone depending on ambient lighting and digital display settings.
