Epicenter is part of a series I created at the end of 2025 while listening to Octavia Butler’s Parable Of The Sower and Parable Of The Talents. The pieces started with prints created from tree bark. As I listened to the books, I intuitively layered watercolor, acrylic glazes and finally pen and ink.
This felt like a very collaborative process between myself and the materials. I felt as though I were visually moving through Butler’s stories in the marks I made. The pieces felt almost prophetic when a couple of months later, the LA fires ravaged through Octavia Butler’s hometown of Altadena.
