I tend to work very intuitively, letting my color mixing dictate where I am I am going to go for the day. I don’t finish every print I start. Sometimes I will get to a point where the print feels 90% finished, but I don’t know what to do, so I file it away until I figure out that last layer. I also get some very delicate atmospheric expenses that I don’t want to destroy, so I save them for another day. This board mounted collage is made up of a compilation of some of the best parts of prints I never finished, or prints that I decided I wasn’t that into anymore. I tend to work with many layers, so the ink on the paper gets very thick. To create the white lines on this collage, I cut into the paper, and carefully removed the layer of ink. Unlike my monotype prints, the composition of this collage is very detailed and thought out.

Process and Patience in All Matters

Drawn to the social aspect of the community art studio at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden, Washington, Ruth Hesse pivoted from a two-decade exploration of monotype printmaking to pursue her interest in ceramics. Primarily self-taught, she has developed complicated and detailed processes to accomplish her surface designs. She works spontaneously and intuitively, deploying her printmaker’s mindset as she manipulates positive and negative space, layers of color, pattern, and texture.

Ruth currently works out of Red Heat Ceramics Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she is able to work in mid- and high-fire environments. Her high-fire pieces are looser and more organic, while the cone six series is more structured, detailed and colorful.

Ruth recently exhibited her ceramic work as an emerging artist at the 2023 American Craft Council American Craft Made Marketplace: Baltimore. Her monotype prints can be found in various corporate and personal collections.

Ruth received her B.A. in 17th Century English Literature from The University of Tulsa and minored in Art, German, and Political Science.
