This work is unframed and made with both collaged old book and printmaking ink.

Families are permutations of blood and chosen connections that are continually changing. People are born, die, get chosen (partnerships of all sorts), or are rejected. What is a truthful way to look at this complicated structure? My work explores how we can look at families for their beauty even if in light of what is difficult and unpleasant to talk about.

Part of our family story is a history you carry - an epigenetic transference from our ancestors that plays out unconsciously. Printmaking is a process that shows an impression of something. The actual surface is not there. Much of what I use to create the work is from something else that makes an impression on the paper through printing, much like how we inherit our traits and epigenetic dispositions. I can take a letter from my aunt, sew it to a piece of paper, and then print it. I then cut it up and sew parts to another print that gets printed again. Ghosts begin to form; “ghost” is a double entendre as the term ‘ghost’ for a printmaker is the residual ink from the initial print. The ghosts of families and the print talk; they speak of the process of building and cutting away; adding and subtracting and creating and dying.

Meet the Creator

I like to challenge traditional ways of working and adhering to a singular media. I use various techniques and materials; painting, printmaking, sewing, collage, video, installation, and book arts to reconcile my perceived experience of chaos as intuition; uncertainty and coincidence as order, clarity, harmony, and connection. Through making art I experience disorganization and coherence repeatedly and delightedly - a process that has engaged me for 40-plus years. I have shown regionally for the past 20 years and the residencies, such as the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, New Mexico (1998 and 2008) have challenged my process and provided venus to connect to communities. Show include; monotypes and paintings at the AVA Gallery, Lebanon; installations and collaborative installations at the Flynndog, Burlington; and prints and hair drawings at Burlington City Arts. Residencies include Vermont Studio Week at the Vermont Studio Center in 2018, and a six-month residency at New City Galerie in 2015. Grants awarded include; a Development Grant from the Vermont Arts Council, 2009 to learn letterpress printing; a Creation Grant from the Vermont Arts Council, 2004 to help fund a collaborative video project with Jane Honer and Karen McGregor; Kittredge Foundation Grant, 2002 to learn more printmaking.
