A one-of-a-kind ceramic vessel exploring the tension of material between control and fracture.
Wheel-thrown in earthenware, the form is developed through a multi-stage process in which sodium silicate is applied to the surface, and the walls are expanded from within as the exterior begins to set. Creating surface tension, this gesture produces a subtle fracture along the entire surface that cannot be replicated.
The resulting texture carries the presence of erosion, as though shaped slowly over time rather than formed in a single moment. Subtle rock impressions are occasionally embedded, further reinforcing this dialogue between material, pressure, and time.
The surface detail is developed through atmospheric firing in an open pit, where flame, smoke, and material interaction directly shape the final finish. Rather than being applied, the coloration emerges through exposure, resulting in unrepeatable, unique markings on each piece.
During firing, the vessels are carefully wrapped to create a localized, oxygen-reduced environment, as flame moves across the surface in a controlled yet unpredictable way. An array of organic materials are used in this process, such as horsehair, hay, dried leaves, coffee grounds, and sugar. As these combust, they imprint the surface with layered grays and deep charcoals.
The firing unfolds over several hours and is followed by a slow cooling period, allowing the surface to develop fully. Once cooled, each piece is hand-cleaned and polished with beeswax, creating a soft sheen that deepens the tonal range while preserving the integrity of the raw, smoke-marked surface.
Designed for dried arrangements or standalone display, these vessels are not watertight and are not intended for use with water.
