These are three separate unframed 18 x 18” one-of-a-kind original abstract cyanotypes, each one a monotype. Together if matted and framed in 24 x 24" frames, they would span over 6 feet horizontally with gaps between them.
Though these one-of-a-kind monotypes look like aquatint etchings or watercolor paintings, they are actually a form of photography called cyanotypes or sun prints. Each is entirely unique as the artist's movements of the light-sensitive paper during exposure to sunlight can not be repeated precisely the same way twice.
A traditional single-exposure cyanotype yields a white silhouette against a dark blue background. But instead of creating a white image by blocking light with solid objects on the light-sensitive paper, I used water to block the light, creating subtle gradations of darkening blue as I submerged the light-sensitive paper for different carefully timed exposures under water, turning, bending and lifting the paper as needed to shape the lines before they become permanently etched by the sun’s light.
