This particular eucalyptus cyanotype has sold but a similar one can be commissioned any month of the year since eucalyptus trees don't lose their leaves in winter. I can make botanical cyanotypes as big as 24 x 36", 36 x 36", 30 x 40" and also long and 24" narrow up to 60" in length but not more than 24" in width. (There are size and weight limitations to how large of a sheet of glass I can get through my doorway to expose the arranged plants to sunlight).

If you need to cover a large area of wall, a triptych of three vertical cyanotypes works quite well. All of my commissioned works are sold unframed.

This is a unique hand-printed cyanotype of actual eucalyptus branches from trees in the woods near my house. Cyanotypes are a kind of 19th century alternative (cameraless) photographic process also known as blueprints and sunprints.

All of my botanical cyanotypes are one-of-kind monotypes. The freshly cut branches or plants are laid in that exact composition only once before they wilt. There is no etched copper plate, no carved wood block, no printing press and no ink to be able to reproduce these images. There is no film negative either. Each is a unique, hand-printed lensless photograph made using real plants.

Ships rolled in an extra wide tube.
Hand-printed on 100% cotton watercolor paper with hand-torn deckled edges or straight-cut edges, whichever you prefer.

From Deep in the Woods: Original Acrylic and Oil paintings and Hand-Printed Cyanotypes

Christine So is a native San Franciscan painter, photographer and printmaker living across the bay next to a redwood forest in the hills of Oakland, California. Her paintings and cyanotypes have been commissioned by Mayo Clinic, Ritz-Carlton, Kimpton Hotels, Starbucks, MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, UTMB Hospital in Galveston and purchased by private collectors in 15 countries, among them, Timothée Chalamet.

Her calm, monochromatic, nature-inspired works on paper are not printed with ink but are actually a form of photography from the 1800s. She works in the antique photographic process of cyanotypes, creating abstract and botanical monotypes in shades of blue as well as landscape photographs of the foggy woods where she lives. The plants used in her one-off prints are cut from her own garden or found in the woods nearby and printed on pure cotton watercolor paper.

No two botanical cyanotype prints are alike. Only her landscape photographs developed using giant negatives and the same cyanotype chemicals are replicable, yet even those hand-printed photographs each differ slightly.

Most of the works listed here on Wescover.com are unframed works on paper, specifically cyanotypes. There are a number of paintings in acrylic and oils on canvas as well. Most artworks are not framed, but a rare few are. Please read the entire description.

NOTE: Most of the works on paper are sold unframed --although the display photos may depict them as framed on a virtual wall to give a sense of their eventual size once a mat and frame are added. Take note of the item's description before purchasing.

Christine has such a connection to nature and the ability to translate that into beautiful pieces of art. Her cyanotypes are created with found materials from the natural world. Created in the 19th century, cyanotypes are so striking with their deep blues and real emphasis on the subject matter. They seem so modern, yet are rooted in history. I love that Christine creates permanence of objects she often finds in the foothills around her home. Her pieces are wonderful, and she is lovely to work with.

I own three of Christine’s cyanotype photograph paintings and another of her earlier acrylic work. Christine has an exceptional eye for composition and a keen sense of how to create a striking image using this technique. I find she is constantly exploring interesting and fresh ways to showcase the uniqueness, versatility and beauty of her cyanotype. I especially love the way her pieces capture the light and shadows often evoking moody blues, eerie, brooding and mysterious atmospheres. Her forest landscapes are filled with a sense of stillness and solitude , an eerie beauty which I’m always drawn to. These are my favorite pieces of hers.

I love Christine's art and buy something different every time she has a show. The blue cyanotypes of nature are so soothing and peaceful. She's always updating her styles and collections, so there's always something more to add to my collection.

I loved working with Christine! She brought years of experience as well as her creative talent to our project. We weren't quite sure how the branches we provided her were going to translate but she did such an extensive exploration that we got the artwork we absolutely love! We're so happy to have worked with Christine.

I ordered one of Christine So’s abstract cyanotypes for a recording studio because we needed something soothing and organic in a studio space that is defined by technology and rigidity. Christine’s artwork has a unique perspective, a perfect balance between abstract and biomorphic modernity. And the color is rich and deep, and seemed to fit any wall, but it landed nicely in a warm wood panel-lined recording booth. We noticed her careful attention to detail, both in the artwork and her framing. We also appreciated her very careful packaging, which ensured the artwork was delivered in unblemished condition. Overall we’re extremely happy with our purchase.

The minute I saw Christine’s stunning pieces I knew I has to purchase a series. Her innovative cyanotype techniques offer an imaginative and modern interpretation on the antiquated photographic process. The elegant simplicity of the artists nature inspired subject matter is fitting for all homes and personal styles.
