Julie Shunick Brown

Dallas, TX

Julie Shunick Brown is a contemporary abstract expressionist painter. Her works suggest places, memories, and emotion - reality not observed visually. They convey a sense of timelessness. Absorbing the environment by slowing to observe people, events, and places enable her to represent life. She searches for calm in the midst of chaos, fueled by a fascination with color. Experimenting, her work changes: evolving and evoking life. Life challenges and inspires. Change envelops; past and future intermingle with present. Memory refines and perfects. This is reflected in her intuitive, multi-layered paintings - meant to be ambiguous and interpreted by the viewer.

The legendary Helen Frankenthaler has particularly inspired her: "You have to know how to use the accident, how to recognize it, how to control it, and ways to eliminate it …A picture that is beautiful, or that comes off, or that works, looks as if it was all made at one stroke."

A native of Nevada, she painted as a child. Growing up in Arizona and Northern Virginia, she studied at The Corcoran School of Art. She graduated with honors from Arizona State University with a B.F.A. in Interior Design in 1975 and continued studying painting and drawing sporadically, most recently at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. In 2012, she left a long career with Procter and Gamble to focus full time on painting. Her studio is at DallasCreativeSpace in the historic Continental Gin Building in Deep Ellum, Dallas, Texas. Her paintings are in private collections throughout the U.S. and Canada. See them at her studio by appointment or at Frisco Fine Art, Frisco, Texas, or McCall Fine Art, Santa Fe.
