Himani Gupta Studio

London, United Kingdom

"Stories from places, people and film"
Himani Gupta (b. 1985) lives and works in London. She completed a Master’s degree in Urban Planning and Real Estate at The Bartlett, University College London (2011–12), and worked in related fields before transitioning to painting as her primary practice. She has completed the Drawing Intensive at the Royal Drawing School and the Turps Offsite Programme for Painters (2024–25). She was born in India and spent her earliest years in Kuwait where her parents were working as doctors, until the Gulf war, during which they had to evacuate. During her early adult life, she moved again - cities and countries - for education, work and travel.

Gupta’s practice encompasses painting and drawing, approaching image-making through material processes and sustained observation. Working from lived environments and film, her work engages questions of place, movement, and the human condition, informed by themes of migration, ecology, and spatial experience. Through layered surfaces, shifts in opacity, and varying degrees of figuration, she constructs images in which place is understood as contingent and continually shaped by memory, perception, and embodied experience.
