D Young V

San Francisco, CA

"D Young V is best known for portraying a future world where history has been replaced with relics from a forgotten world, namely our modern society. Tribes of individuals have created culture from what is left of ours, and there is a sense of lawlessness about.”

D Young V then takes these characters and draws them with pen and ink. His extremely detailed works can not only be seen in the gallery, but also on the streets. You never know which city corner may hold a chapter from the future world Young V has created.” -Warholian
Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"For me this can often be soaking in the energy of those around me. If I am painting a mural in a location where there is an audience watching me I often find myself taking in what they say and soaking in what they feel. Very often I find myself taking in what those people think and feel as part of my creative process."

Q&A

What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?

"I want them to feel anything they like. I find that the interpretations that people give me of my work become part of the process in creating new work. In many ways I feed off my audience by allowing their ideas channel through me in the action of creating new work."

Q&A

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?

"Whenever I am putting up street art in a foreign city I always come across somebody I know or somebody connected to me from San Francisco. This could be a coworker on vacation, a person from my neighborhood, a friend of a friend or a San Franciscan that recognizes my work from San Francisco. Every time I travel this happens, so I just expect it now at this point."

Q&A

What is your favorite material to work with?

"My favorite material to work with is Micron 08 pens on bristol paper. I find the tedious effort of filling in large spaces with a small pen to be highly therapeutic and meditative. The whole process puts me into very relaxing state. The finished product then gives me an amazing sense of accomplishment."

Q&A

What motivates and inspires you?

"These days what inspires me most is my relationships with other people. I find that the work I do becomes a collaborative effort between myself and the person I am focusing on. In a way it's like combining my energy with theirs in order to bring forth a physical product that conveys the the mix of those energies."

Q&A

What makes a space special?

"Every space is unique. I find that I adopt my art to best work with any space I am given. The shape of each space is different as is the type of people it attracts. The challenge and inspiration for me is to adopt my work to either compliment or conquer the space I am given. I feel that art when excecuted properly can transform any space into something completely different, thus placing the viewer into an entirely new context."

Q&A

What’s unique about your work?

"This is pretty tough question. I realize that my work has a very unique style and identity to it. People often say that my art is highly recognizable and stands out. However, I believe this can be said of most working artists.

I suppose most of my work has certain graphic, geometrical and text similarities. Throughout the different changes and evolution my work has undertaken over the years; these elements tend to remain consistent."
