Chris Baumgartner-artist

Seattle, WA

"Abstract art"
I began my art journey in San Francisco in 1968 at the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design from which I graduated in 1972. Then followed several years of teaching there. This overlapped with studies in painting and drawing under Norman Stiegelmeyer at the University of Berkeley Extension in San Francisco. It was the sixties and a great time to be living in San Francisco and studying art.
In 1977 my husband and I moved to Seattle where I continued to develop my painting and collage skills which led to various local group shows and annual solo shows at the Petit Formes Gallery in Osaka, Japan.
In 1980 I took a position as senior designer at WDTA, designing the interiors of Boeing 767 and 747 airplanes for international clients.
In 1990 I opened Istina, a high end clothing store and designed a number of clothing lines which were sold throughout the country. After the store closed this year, I was able to devote all my time to creating art--painting in acrylics, Sumi ink and also collage work. Art has been a constant for the past 50 years and has taken several different directions but the one idea all along has been the fascination with that fine edge between art and design. That's what's so fun to explore.
