Part of the PNW Collection, which celebrates the influence of water across the Pacific Northwest, the Crater Quilt is inspired by the northern slope of Crater Lake in southern Oregon and the way the surface of the crater, the ultra blue water and the sky intersect. Minimal and bold with multidirectional quilting and visual texture, the Crater Quilt creates depth despite its simplicity.

BEHIND THE DESIGN
Crater Lake was one of the places I visited during my first year of travels that I knew the least about, but it impacted me the most. I knew it was deep, I knew it was inside of a crater - that was it. As I drove up to the rim of the lake after a long drive through the remote forests of southern Oregon, I was shocked by how blue the water was. Turns out, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country and because it’s only rain and snow fed, it’s one of the most pristine lakes in the world. Both of these combined creates this incredibly vibrant and deep blue.

I sat at the top of the crater rim and picnicked on that warm summer day, gazing down into the lake, at the gentle slope of the crater, watching tiny people all the way down at the lake’s edge jump in and swim in that blue, blue water. I haven’t seen that lake since, but I still see that blue all the time.

Vacilando is a design and production studio dedicated to making beautiful, useful objects while modernizing the tradition of American Craftsmanship.

Raised in Texas and London by two architect parents, Laura spent several years in New York City studying art history and painting before embarking on a year-long road trip adventure around the U.S. in 2013. Six years of traveling and two Airstream later, She now calls the Texas Hill Country home.

Completely self taught (with the help of the internet), Laura discovered the medium of textiles on the road and fell in love with the utility and potential of the craft. With a couple years of quilting under her belt and a dream of designing and making quilts all day, she launched Vacilando in February of 2015.

Endlessly eager to explore new places, wander through markets, and discover interesting colors and textures in nature, Laura draws inspiration from her travels and translates them into the modern minimalist designs that Vacilando is known for.
