The Gladstone stool is a refined counter-height stool that blends a clean Mid-Century inspired aesthetic with traditional materials and joinery techniques. Each piece is handcrafted to order in our Ottawa studio.
The Gladstone is built using mortise and tenon joints throughout the frame to ensure long-term durability. Meticulous attention to detail is evident throughout the stool’s design and construction: softly rounded frame edges, carefully contoured slats on the low back, brass caps on the foot rails to protect them from wear, and leather floor-protection pads integrated into the rounded feet.
The firm but resilient seat is made from a thick sheet of top-quality English Bridle leather that is stretched around the frame. The seat is supported by a lightly-padded plywood panel built into the frame, ensuring it will not lose its shape. The vegetable-tanned leather will develop a patina over time and is easily maintained with saddle soap.
The Gladstone is also available with a hand-woven Danish cord seat.
The white oak or blackened oak frame is treated with a hand-rubbed oil finish. This low-luster natural finish contains no VOCs and protects the wood without obscuring the look and feel of the material.
