Our Chest Laundry Basket is handwoven with rattan and cane. Inside, there is a divider, allowing for two separate laundry loads. Brass fixtures hold the lid of the basket, and leather straps hold it open. This large basket isn’t just for laundry, it would be equally perfect as a toy storage basket or for storage blankets and cushions. We love it placed at the end of a bed! Our Chest Laundry Basket is ethically handcrafted by our talented artisans in Northern India, and designed by us at our studio in the UK.

Please Note: Due to the use of natural materials, these timeless pieces sometimes have slight ‘imperfections’. This includes natural markings, varying colour consistency and differing sizes by up to 2cm. We love this because it makes our products more unique and one of a kind; no two items will be the same.

Materials: Rattan, cane, brass and leather.

Care: Wipe clean with a damp cloth, follow with a dry cloth.

If the item is in stock, it will be dispatched within 1-3 working days. If the item is out of stock, it will be available on Backorder and will be handmade for you by our artisans in India within 2-3 weeks. Please note, if you order multiple items and one of the items is on Backorder, we will ship your whole order together once everything is in stock (in 2-3 weeks). Ethically Handcrafted Rattan lighting and furniture, Designed in the UK.

Hastshilp is a small family run UK-based business, run by Aadil and Megan. Our bespoke designs are drawn by hand in our UK-based studio, and then sent over to our partner team in India to be brought to life. All our products are handmade in a small town in Northern India, where Aadil is originally from, by a family whose skills have been passed down through generations. Ethical and sustainable practices were important to us right from the beginning, as well as ensuring we were educated on the whole process, from sourcing to production and everything in between.

The concept of Hastshilp began when we weren’t able to find many options of rattan home decor pieces for sale in the UK, and almost none that were made in India. Due to a lack of demand and an increase in cheaper machine-made goods, cane craftsmanship is sadly becoming a dying art in India. After generations of hard work, many artisans have been left without a reliable income. We produce our items on a small scale with a steady production, ensuring our artisans will always have work.

We work with independent artisans who work from their own shops and homes. Ramesh works alongside his son and a team of other local artisans, skilfully handcrafting each item with the traditional process of cane craftsmanship. By working independently with us, Ramesh and his team are able to earn a more than fair wage of living, creating a secure life and future for their families. Keeping a slow but steady production ensures that our artisans will always have work and a stable income.

As each item is handmade, and due to the use of natural materials and the traditional process of working with cane, no two items will be exactly the same. Rather than hiding slight markings and darker spots which occur naturally, we choose to embrace them, and believe this is what makes our items so special and unique.

All our items are handmade from scratch, so naturally each item is unique and made to the highest quality – built to last for years and years (and years!). The process from field to home is a lengthy one that requires multiple steps and techniques, and some pieces can even take days to make. Naturally with beautiful handmade pieces like this, comes a higher cost. Investment pieces where the cost of purchase balances out the lifespan of our pieces and supports fair wages for the creation of each item.
