Union Square Cafe’s, under the helm of Executive Chef & Partner Carmen Quagliata and Managing Partner Sam Lipp, serves local ingredients in the form of Southern-Italian and Californian dishes. David Rockwell, the architect in charge of the design was able to maintain its original’s eccentric hodgepodge space. The floors of the double-height room are covered in finished cherry wood and the original ’80s-era artworks (a Frank Stella print, those zany watercolors of bowls of fruit) adorn the walls. The mezzanine includes rows of tables, private dining rooms, and a second, more intimate bar, which is built for dining and has been fashioned with wood salvaged from the iconic bar on 16th Street.
