Shaded is a sculptural work that evokes the quiet presence of shadow within the forest.

Collected following forestry pruning in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, this fragment of bark caught my attention for its unusual vertical silhouette, weathered textures and deep green moss spreading across its surface. Its form resembles a solitary natural monolith, rising from the forest floor like a remnant of an ancient landscape.

The interplay between the rough, earthy bark and the soft moss evokes a place sheltered from direct light, where time seems to slow and life unfolds quietly, away from view. There is a sense of stillness in the piece, but also of persistence — a reminder that even in shadow, nature continues to grow and transform.

Preserved in its original form, Shaded invites the viewer to contemplate the beauty of overlooked places and the subtle presence of life within them.

Meet the Creator
Wescover creator since 2026
Creation is my way back to myself.

I’m Raúl Fernández Carretero, an artist from Madrid, Spain, exploring different ways of creating and discovering myself through the artistic process.

Photography, writing and sculpture are among the mediums through which I observe, interpret and connect with the world around me. My creative practice is deeply intertwined with nature, whose forms, textures and rhythms offer me a sense of balance and a constant source of inspiration.

My project La Piel del Bosque (The Skin of the Forest) began in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, where I collected bark fragments following forestry pruning. Drawn to their colours, textures and expressive forms, I chose to preserve them as sculptural works in their own right, inviting others to discover the beauty that can exist in what is often overlooked.

I’m currently continuing this exploration through wood and other natural materials, allowing curiosity, observation and the creative process itself to guide me towards new forms of expression.
