Corner in Rust and Cobalt continues my ongoing architectural series, where I isolate a single sunbaked corner - a weathered rust-orange wall meeting an expanse of clear blue sky. I anchored the composition with a window on the left, its white lintel and sill framing dark glass, while a striped pink-and-black shadow block juts in at the lower right, cast by an unseen fire escape. I'm drawn to how hard-edged geometry and diagonal shadow can create real graphic energy even in a quiet, overlooked corner like this one.

I worked this piece in oil and cold wax on canvas, building up the same mottled, sun-worn texture that runs through this whole body of work - a quality that reads almost like weathered stucco up close. I chose a black frame specifically to echo the deep shadow passages within the painting itself, tying the framing directly back into the composition. At 13.75" x 16.75" x 1", it holds a substantial presence on the wall while staying intimate in scale.

This piece is part of my ongoing exploration of the American built environment - motels, walk-ups, storefronts, and the quiet architecture of small-town streets. I like turning an overlooked corner like this into a study of light, shadow, and color relationships.
