"Extraordinary glass mosaics and kiln-fired tiles that will glorify your projects for at least 1000 years!"
As a designer and fabricator of mosaics and architectural ceramics, I have been creating theme-based interior and exterior public art installations in Florida for two decades. I delight in the design and fabrication of site-specific projects, all made with glass and ceramic tesserae, kiln fired tiles and hand-made bas-relief ceramics, over concrete substrates. This combination of materials is designed to withstand both pedestrian traffic, and the harsh Florida sun, wind and rain, in perpetuity.
Some highlights of my Florida installations are:
2000 The Florida Botanical Gardens, Largo, Florida -I designed and fabricated twenty-nine of the park’s signature mosaic bromeliads onto concrete panels. I also created mosaics for a concrete bench and table with images of Florida flora and fauna
2002 & 2004 -Orlando Shakespeare Theater- I interpreted the only authentic black and white etching of William Shakespeare into a six by nine foot mosaic color portrait that adorns the front of the building. I created a twenty-six foot long mosaic frieze above the main entry to the theater, with bas-relief ceramic characters from the plays surrounded by lively glass mosaics. The theater uses my portrait as their logo.
2008 - Z.L. Riley Park, Orlando -I was asked by landscape architects Lucido & Associates to envision a theme for a new park in the historic African-American Paramore district. As well as create a mosaic portrait of ZL Riley, I made African Village inspired glass mosaic columns for the pavilion, and sidewalk insets with exotic animals. I attended neighborhood meetings, and worked with twenty-two local children who each made his or her own mosaic. Their work is featured in columns on the park perimeter.
2011- Main Branch Palm Beach County Library “Books on A Library Floor” is inspired by the “Upswept Floor Mosaics”, popular in Italy in the first and second centuries AD. The floor mosaic features five large books, which include a portrait of Albert Einstein, a children’s book called “Bugs”, and a book with legible quotes by famous authors.
2012-2013 Susan B Katz Theater, Pembroke Pines
I covered the front of the building with mosaics and ceramics with theatrical images. The eight-sided twenty- foot tall columns are covered in glass mosaics with hand-made stars. The images used feature Kings and Queens, Heroes and Villains, Dorothy and Oz, Musicians and Performers. I repeated these images in a painted and kiln-fired tile mural, as well as large high-relief ceramic masks.
2014 “The Madison” Affordable Senior Living-Tampa,Fl
I created a glass and ceramic mosaic, size 10’X30’, for the front of the seven-story building that features tropical birds, butterflies and flowers, as well as a mosaic sun fabricated with 24K gold tiles. For Madison Crossing, a sister building in Kissimmee, Florida, I created a 12’x32’ glass and ceramic mosaic for the front of the building with orange trees and egrets in flight.
2018-2019 Madison Crossing 2 and Madison Point, Clearwater, Florida
We chose kiln fired tile murals 12'x30' to enliven the exteriors of these two seven story buildings. Images feature the local flora and fauna.
As well as working on public installations, I continually experiment with 2D & 3D ceramics, multi media mosaics and concrete sculptures. I love to teach, and am honored to be part of the summer faculty at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York.
