Los Angeles, CA

Hagop Belian is a mixed-media collage artist. His creatures are Totems that represent the merging of a human being with their spirit animal. He regards his creations as “medicine” offerings, as they are intended to bring healing and inspirational energy to the spaces that they adorn. The totems are unique and powerful and represent different cultures, race, and gender. These characters emerge as if they had always wanted to exist in the world and they demonstrate that we are all created from the same energy that unites us together as one global community. Hagop’s intention with the work is for people to recognize their own spirit and witness their strength of character reflected back to them.
Q&A

What is your favorite material to work with?

"My favorite material to work with is paper because it is a living organism and is a great teacher of patience and perception. Sensitive yet sometimes not forgiving. It has a very particular way of being, acting, and becoming that is better understood over time and use."

Q&A

What’s unique about your work?

"All my work is about humans meeting their animal spirit. Even though my work looks like it has been hand sketched or illustrated, it is all collaged from books dating from late 1700's - to early 1900's. All the images are a mixture of vintage illustrations and wood carvings."

Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"My process is very intuitive and requires lots of research. All my work is based on intention. It starts by an inspiring image that evokes an emotion and organically emerges into a totem. Depending on the totem, they are sometimes developed to inhabit a certain realm or a universe they represent or reside in."
