One of two large analog collages Stephen Sheffield made for The Charles Hotel in Cambridge Massachusetts. (Circa 1998). The rough theme here is The Charles River, with The Harvard Footbridge, shot by Stephen, as the central image. A rower, captured by photographer and scientist Eadweard Muybridge can be seen making his way across the piece and other small single images collaged throughout. . This piece is 140”x44” and comprised of 40 11x14” sheets of photographic paper that have been toned and distressed and mounted on board. I then placed off-register printed sheets of paper and transparent sheets of kodalith that had the same, or contrasting images. These images were all hand printed in my darkroom and the largest images were exposed on the wall of my studio with the enlarger placed on its side and moved far back from the wall like a projector.
