Commission for a Montreal elementary school

Sinuous curves of stainless steel cable entwine in an elaborate central knot and connect iconic geometric shapes of marble and mirror.

In the competition for for the exterior wall, the jury was looking for a work with emblematic power, which would be inspirational for the students in the multi-cultural neighbourhood. Tissé serré was chosen for its visual impact and its elegant and playful evocation of themes of cooperation and exploration.

The symbolic associations of the knot – union, puzzle, know-how – evoke the bonds, challenges, and discoveries of the school world, while the path of each cable combines with the others to create a harmonious whole – tightly woven – underscoring community solidarity.
