Constructed Territories: Paintings by printmaker Fawn Atencio
In their first solo exhibition of 2019, Mai Wyn Fine Art presents Constructed Territories featuring new paintings by Denver artist Fawn Atencio. An established printmaker, Atencio uses the tools of her trade to create abstract landscapes inspired by both the Far East and her native Colorado. Meet the artist at a Special Preview Event on Thursday, January 31st from 6-8pm or during the 1st Friday Gallery Walk, February 1st from 5-10pm. Constructed Territories continues through March 9th, 2019.
A Colorado native, Atencio spent many a summer camping and exploring the Rio Grande National Forest with her family. Years later traveling through Asia, India and North Africa as an adult, she realized how much of her identity was formed by those early experiences in the pristine American West. Atencio describes this current work as “dreamlike landscapes, which incorporate the romance of the West and impressions of the East.”
While categorized as painting Fawn Atencio’s Constructed Territories remain an extension of her printmaking background. Worked in a series on sheets of Rives BFK, Atencio uses plates to “drag down” ink across her paper much like a printmaker would. Layered with loose washes of paint, splatters of ink and hard-edge graphite lines; the result is rich compositions with otherworldly references.
Fawn Atencio’s solo exhibition at Mai Wyn Fine Art aligns with her printmaking workshop Collective Whereabouts running February 9th & 10th and 16th & 17th at the Denver Art Museum. Organized in conjunction with the major exhibition Rembrandt: Painter as Printmaker, Atencio presents an interactive printmaking workshop for children and adults alike in the Museum’s Print Studio. Workshop is included in general admission and free for members. Contact the Denver Art Museum for more information.

Mai Wyn Fine Art is located at 744 Santa Fe Dr. in the heart of Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe Drive. The gallery exclusively features Colorado-based contemporary artists and makers showcased through rotating curated exhibitions.
