In 2003, an underutilized 42,000 SF warehouse in Hollywood was converted to 47 residential lofts. In 2017, when the building’s new owners opted to renovate, Omgivning was brought on board to reimagine the ground-floor lobby and fifth-floor rooftop.
The building, a former furniture warehouse, is located on a narrow alley just a block from the bustling intersection of Hollywood and Vine. Adding to the context, the structure’s exterior is of richly textured board-formed concrete with heavy steel window frames. But its entry lobby felt cavernous, and the rooftop, in spite of its commanding 360-degree views, was neglected and underused.
Omgivning pulled together a project team with many local independent businesses in key roles, including landscape architecture, furniture and lighting fabrication, and visual art. Within the constraints of a tight budget, the design concept was to create a pair of intimate places, where material richness was foregrounded while still fitting into the warehouse’s rough-edged feel.
