We love that this grand San Francisco home was inspired by Le Petit Trianon (at Versailles, in France), which was inhabited by the lady of the house (Marie Antoinette). Out of this came our inspiration for “The Wo-Man Cave”. What a great opportunity to create a fem-forward space for the avantgarde woman of today. Inspired by the modern day LadyBoss who juggles many responsibilities- we imagined a space of her own to relax and rejuvenate. As noted in Virginia Woolf’s iconic essay, “A Room of One’s Own”- women need spaces (preferably perfectly appointed) of their own to think, relax and gather inspiration. Bright and joyful abstracted floral wallpaper anchors the space. In contrast, the rest of the room revises traditional ideas of what a woman wants, with pieces that are a little edgy and dark, with furniture that is lounge-y, comfortable, chunky and generally less precious. A place for more intimate gatherings and close friends, to read, enjoy a cocktail- a retreat from the formalities and pressures of daily life. A cozy contemporary get-away. A place where all are welcomed- but designed with her in mind. We chose the Game Room because it was a real challenge, as it was previously a storage room for the ballroom furniture and didn’t have the grand appeal of the other rooms in the house. We have resurfaced the whole room to bring it up to the level of the rest of the house, with new wood floors, dry bar, all new trim package, new lighting design, etc. Every surface is new and re-imagined.
