The Vermilion Kikkō Vanguard — Japanese Ceremonial Silk Lumbar Pillow, Tortoiseshell Hexagon in Black and Vermilion

Price from €235 to €335

A lumbar pillow cover in Japanese ceremonial silk, cut from a Nishijin fukuro obi (袋帯): kikkō (亀甲, tortoiseshell hexagon — longevity and protection) at architectural scale in vermilion and gold across midnight-black silk. Envelope-pocket back, no metal against the silk; 50 × 31 cm (also 36 × 31 cm). For dark, graphic rooms. Spot clean only. Unrepeatable, finished at the Renaras atelier, Amsterdam. Kikkō. The hexagon of longevity. One of Japan's longest-continuous symbols of protection — the tortoiseshell geometry, rendered here at architectural scale across midnight-black silk. Against a midnight-black silk ground, the kikkō tortoiseshell hexagon is rendered in deep vermilion and gold, with platinum silver flashing at the intersections. At each hexagonal centre, hanabishi floral crests emerge in layered metallic thread, building an architectural depth no printed fabric can approach. The black gives the composition its weight. The vermilion gives it its voice. A pillow for monochrome sofas, richly upholstered armchairs, charcoal-linen beds — quiet beauty for ordinary moments, gathered around a shared table. The face is the original silk, backed in undyed linen. Envelope pocket closure. No metal touches the visible silk. Product type Lumbar pillow cover Silk source Japanese ceremonial obi (pre-loved); origin Japan. Weave / technique Nishijin-ori 西陣織 (fukuro obi 袋帯) Motif Kikkō 亀甲 (tortoiseshell hexagon — longevity, protection) Construction Envelope-pocket closure; no metal against the visible silk Dimensions 50 × 31 cm; also 36 × 31 cm Origin of silk Japan Assembled in Amsterdam, Netherlands Care Spot clean only Unrepeatable Yes SKU REN-PIL-005-L Renaras: Japanese ceremonial silk, reimagined for daily life. Each piece arrives with its own passport from the atelier — a small handmade record of the silk's first life and its transformation, signed and dated in Amsterdam. One silk. One story. One piece. Never repeated.

Renaras is an Amsterdam atelier that transforms vintage Japanese ceremonial silk (kimono, obi, furisode and uchikake) into contemporary objects for the home and wardrobe. Wall tapestries, silk textile paintings, bed runners, cushions, table runners, placemats, napkins, bottle sleeves and knot bags are each cut from a single textile, so every piece is unrepeatable. The practice follows mottainai, the Japanese conviction that nothing of value should be wasted. Silk woven for ceremony is given a second life rather than left folded away. Each piece is finished by skilled seamstresses and accompanied by a record of its provenance.
