The Kikkō Royal — Japanese Ceremonial Silk Lumbar Pillow, Tortoiseshell Hexagon and Paulownia in Black and Gold

Price from €235 to €335

A lumbar pillow cover in Japanese ceremonial silk, cut from a Nishijin fukuro obi (袋帯): three imperial crests — kikkō (亀甲, tortoiseshell), kiri (桐, paulownia) and kiku (菊, chrysanthemum) — in raised gold on lacquer-black silk. Envelope-pocket back, no metal against the silk; 50 × 30 cm. For lacquer-black drama. Spot clean only. Unrepeatable, finished at the Renaras atelier, Amsterdam. Kikkō. Kiri. Kiku. Three of Japan's most enduring crests gathered into one composition — tortoiseshell, paulownia, chrysanthemum — woven across lacquer-black silk. Against a deep lacquer-black silk ground, the kikkō tortoiseshell hexagon is rendered in a heavy raised metallic gold grid. At each hexagonal centre, kiri paulownia crests and kiku imperial chrysanthemums alternate in vivid vermilion, leaf green and burnished gold — the twin symbols of the Japanese empress and the imperial throne, woven together. The black gives the composition its authority. The gold gives it its grid. A pillow for ivory linen, charcoal, forest green, the aged oak of a library — quiet beauty for ordinary moments, gathered around a shared table. Seamless envelope closure. No metal touches the visible silk. Product type Lumbar pillow cover Silk source Japanese ceremonial obi (pre-loved); origin Japan. Weave / technique Nishijin-ori 西陣織 (fukuro obi 袋帯) Motif Kikkō 亀甲 (tortoiseshell), kiri 桐 (paulownia) and kiku 菊 (chrysanthemum) — three imperial crests Construction Seamless envelope closure; no metal against the visible silk Dimensions 50 × 30 cm; small format also offered live Origin of silk Japan Assembled in Amsterdam, Netherlands Care Spot clean only Unrepeatable Yes SKU REN-PIL-006-L Renaras: Japanese ceremonial silk, reimagined for daily life. Each piece arrives with its own passport from the atelier — a small handmade record of the silk's first life and its transformation, signed and dated in Amsterdam. One silk. One story. One piece. Never repeated.

Renaras is an Amsterdam atelier that transforms vintage Japanese ceremonial silk (kimono, obi, furisode and uchikake) into contemporary objects for the home and wardrobe. Wall tapestries, silk textile paintings, bed runners, cushions, table runners, placemats, napkins, bottle sleeves and knot bags are each cut from a single textile, so every piece is unrepeatable. The practice follows mottainai, the Japanese conviction that nothing of value should be wasted. Silk woven for ceremony is given a second life rather than left folded away. Each piece is finished by skilled seamstresses and accompanied by a record of its provenance.
