🏺 TERRACOTTA BONE INLAY WATERFALL CONSOLE
Ivory buffalo bone set by hand into a warm terracotta ground, in a
continuous waterfall form with no legs and no joints. Made in our
workshop in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, where families have worked bone for
generations.
Four sizes, from a narrow 12 inch depth to a 60 inch statement piece.
✦ ✦ ✦
📐 DIMENSIONS
36" W × 12" D × 30" H 91 × 30 × 76 cm
42" W × 14" D × 30" H 107 × 36 × 76 cm
48" W × 16" D × 30" H 122 × 41 × 76 cm
60" W × 16" D × 30" H 152 × 41 × 76 cm
Height is 30 inches on every size, which is standard console height and
the one that works under most mirrors and behind most sofas.
The 36 × 12 is genuinely narrow. Twelve inches front to back is shallow
enough for a hallway where a standard 16 or 18 inch console would catch
shoulders.
✦ ✦ ✦
📏 WHICH SIZE DO I NEED?
In an entryway Leave 4 to 6 inches clear at each end of the
wall. Measure the wall, subtract a foot, and
take the closest size down.
Behind a sofa Match or go slightly under your sofa width.
A console wider than the sofa reads as a
mistake. At 30 inches high it sits level with
or just below most sofa backs.
Under a mirror The console should be wider than the mirror by
a clear margin on both sides.
In a hallway Take the 12 inch depth. Anything deeper turns
a walkway into a squeeze.
Between two sizes? Go down. An undersized console looks intentional.
An oversized one looks like it was bought for a different room.
✦ ✦ ✦
🤎 MATERIALS AND BUILD
▪ Buffalo bone, cut and set entirely by hand
▪ Pigmented resin in warm terracotta
▪ Hand sanded and polished finish
▪ Continuous waterfall form, no separate legs
There is no storage. This is an open console, a surface and a
silhouette. If you need drawers, message us and we will tell you what
else we make.
The bone is a byproduct sourced from licensed suppliers. No animal is
harmed for this craft.
✦ ✦ ✦
🌼 THE PATTERN
Eight petalled rosettes repeating edge to edge in a continuous lattice,
each flower locking into the next so the field never breaks. The visual
logic is the same as a jaali, the pierced stone screen you find in
Mughal palaces, where the pattern is read through rather than looked at.
A narrow bone border runs the outer edge of every face and along the
top, framing the field without interrupting it.
The waterfall form is what makes this piece difficult. On a table with
legs the pattern stops at each joint and starts again. Here it has to
run down one side, across the top and down the other without a single
break in alignment, over an unbroken curve. Every rosette on the curve
is cut to a slightly different shape to hold the geometry as the surface
turns.
That is the whole reason this form is rare in bone inlay.
✦ ✦ ✦
🏡 WHERE IT WORKS
Terracotta is a warm neutral pretending to be a colour. It behaves like
clay, leather and unglazed pottery, which is why it settles into rooms
instead of shouting in them.
Against deep green the pairing that does the most work
Against cream the piece becomes the one warm note
Against white the ivory recedes, the terracotta carries
With brass and rattan it stops reading as a statement at all
Entryway under a mirror. Behind a sofa in an open plan room. Along a
hallway wall. Against a dining room wall holding lamps and a tray.
Suits boho, maximalist, eclectic, Mediterranean and warm minimal rooms.
✦ ✦ ✦
🕯️ STYLE IT WITH
Aged brass and unlacquered gold, cane and rattan, olive and eucalyptus,
ginger jars, vintage Persian or Turkish rugs, pleated linen shades,
terracotta and unglazed ceramics.
Warm metals only. Chrome and polished nickel fight it.

💌 IF ANYTHING ARRIVES DAMAGED
Photograph the packaging and the piece before unpacking further, and

This happens rarely, but bone inlay travels a long way and we would
rather tell you the plan up front than after.
✦ ✦ ✦
👐 MADE BY HAND
Sambhal, in Uttar Pradesh, has worked bone and horn for generations. It
is the craft belt this technique actually comes from, not the one
usually named on listings like this.
Bone is cut into slivers on a bandsaw. Each piece is shaped by hand,
then set one at a time onto the form. The ground colour is filled in
around the set pieces. The whole surface is sanded flat and polished.
Because every piece is cut by hand, no two are identical. Slight
variation in bone tone, and the faint natural grain visible up close,
are the marks of real bone rather than a printed or moulded surface.
✦ ✦ ✦
🤍 CARE
Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Wipe spills immediately. Use coasters under
anything wet. Keep out of long direct sunlight and away from radiators.
No chemical cleaners, no abrasives, no water left standing.
✦ ✦ ✦
✉️ CUSTOM ORDERS AND TRADE

width for a specific wall, send the measurement.
