Experience the architectural elegance of the Ming Dynasty. A timeless legacy, breathing in your living space.
The Concept
Faithfully reproduced 1:1 from classical museum masterpieces, this Su-Zuo (Suzhou-Style) Ming Square Table and Armchair Five-Piece Ensemble is a masterly evolution of historical seating curated by designers Yuchen and Judy. Rooted in the pinnacle of Suzhou literati cabinetmaking, this five-piece collection—comprising one "Golden-Hook" Square Table and four matching Square-Back Armchairs—embodies the symmetry, order, and scholarly refinement of Ming Dynasty court and studio life. In classical China, the square table (Fangzhuo) paired with four dignified armchairs served as the cultural epicenter of the scholar-official's (Shidafu) studio, hosting intimate tea ceremonies, calligraphy gatherings, philosophical discourse, and refined banquets. Engineered to inspire an upright, composed posture, the ensemble bridges traditional Eastern literati philosophy with the sophisticated aesthetic of modern Western spaces, bringing an undeniable air of serene nobility and executive presence into the contemporary dining room, tea room, or private gallery.
The Craft and Material
The ensemble is meticulously executed in rare Imperial Midnight Black-Gold timber (Royal Ziguangtan)—renowned for its extraordinary, water-sinking density. Within its abyssal, midnight-black depths dance cool, metallic golden flecks, creating a dramatic visual tension between shadow and radiance. Adding a striking layer of warmth, the central backrest panels of the four armchairs feature prized, richly figured contrasting natural hardwood insets, whose glowing amber-russet grain illuminates the dark architectural frame. Driven by its formidable, water-sinking specific gravity, this ultra-dense hardwood locks in the eternal heirloom value of a true generational masterpiece, offering an unyielding, monumental presence beneath its poised silhouette.
The Ornamentation: Showcasing the celebrated restraint and precision of Su-Zuo craftsmanship, the four armchairs feature a subtly stepped top rail and geometric key-fret scroll armrests (Guaiziwen) that project architectural clarity. The tri-part backrest splat crowns the seat with an openwork carved mythical Chi-Phoenix lattice panel at the top, a warm-toned figured timber inset at the center, and an airy open aperture below. The matching Square Table features a classic recessed waist with "Golden-Hook" (Jingou) molded edges and straight beaded legs terminating in powerful inward-curving hoof feet (Matizu), accented beneath the apron by exquisitely pierced Chi-Phoenix corner spandrels (Chifengwen Yatou)—an auspicious imperial motif symbolizing harmony, prestige, and enduring prosperity.
The Joinery: Purely handmade using traditional nail-free mortise and tenon construction. The armchairs employ canonical Ming-style Luoguo humpback stretchers paired with finely sculpted openwork ornamental struts (Kazi-hua) beneath the seat frame, while the front and rear posts are crafted with continuous through-leg construction for uncompromising structural integrity. Both the table and chairs incorporate traditional mitered, mortised, and tenoned floating-panel frames with recessed "sounding-drum" construction (Luotang Caigu). The chairs are anchored below by "stepping-higher" foot stretchers (Bubugao Ganjiaocheng)—an auspicious classical motif symbolizing continuous elevation in life and career.
The Finish: A natural, mirror-like deep patina highlights the abyssal midnight-black grain, leaping golden mineral threads, and the warm organic figure of the backrest insets, creating a commanding visual effect that shifts gracefully with the light.
100% Handcrafted. Traditional Mortise and Tenon Joinery.

Artisan Note
As a bespoke work created using rare natural timber and traditional hand tools, each piece possesses a singular character. Even with the most rigorous timber selection, natural color variations, organic timber knots, burls, mineral lines, and subtle 0–3 cm (0–1.2 in) hand-measurement tolerances are inherent hallmarks of authentic precious hardwood craftsmanship rather than quality defects. Please note that the deep midnight luster, golden shimmer, and warm inset tones of the timber may shift slightly in tone depending on ambient lighting conditions and digital display settings.
