🕯️ A red that most people have never seen on furniture
This is a deep brick red, closer to old lacquer than to anything bright. Against it, the mother of pearl reads almost white in flat light and then turns over into blue, green and rose the moment the light moves. That shift is the whole reason to own the piece. Photographs only get about half of it.
The pattern is a running floral vine, cut and set by hand, framed by a fine quatrefoil border that runs across the top, down both sides and around the plinth. The corners are radiused rather than square, so the vine wraps the edge without breaking. Two deep drawers, each with a carved rosette pull at the centre.
🐚 Mother of pearl, not printed, not resin
Every pale piece in the pattern is real shell, cut by hand and set individually into the tinted ground. Shell has depth and it moves with the light. A printed surface is flat and stays flat. Look closely at the macro photo and you will see the slight irregularity between adjacent pieces where the artisan's cut differs by a fraction of a millimetre. That irregularity is the mark of the real thing.
The carcass is mango wood with engineered panels. No MDF anywhere in the piece.
📐 Dimensions
Small: 19" W x 15" D x 20" H (48 x 38 x 51 cm) Medium: 22" W x 17" D x 23" H (56 x 43 x 58 cm) Large: 25" W x 19" D x 26" H (64 x 48 x 66 cm)
Pick by the height of your mattress top, not by the size of the room. The small suits a platform or low bed, the medium a standard bed, and the large a tall bed with a thick mattress, which is what most American beds now are. A nightstand that sits below your mattress is the most common regret with a piece like this.
🛠️ How it is made
The wooden frame is built and seasoned first. The pattern is drawn onto it freehand. Shell is then cut piece by piece to match each element of the drawing, and set one at a time. Tinted resin is worked in around the shell until the ground is level, then the whole surface is sanded flat and finished. The interior and back are finished to match.
Nothing about this is fast, and the piece you receive is built for your order rather than pulled from a shelf.
🧽 Care
Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Skip chemical cleaners and anything abrasive. Keep it out of direct sun, which will fade the ground over years, and away from radiators. Use a coaster under anything hot or wet. Shell is hard-wearing but it is a natural material and it responds to being looked after.
