Lotus & Lattice is a pair of c.1920 Chinese giltwood openwork panels, each mounted on its own solid wood backplate with a 2 cm floating gap. The central roundel depicts a bird among lotus flowers — a classic Chinese motif symbolising purity and harmony — set against a honeycomb lattice that filters light into delicate, shifting shadows throughout the day.
These are surviving architectural salvage fragments from a traditional timber-framed structure. The original red lacquer and traces of gilt have aged into a rich, stable patina over a century — a surface that only time could produce, impossible to replicate today. The minor wear is not a flaw, but the fingerprint of history, adding depth and authenticity to the piece.
Dimensions: Each backplate measures 60 cm W × 25 cm H (23.6ʺ × 9.8ʺ); antique panel 48 cm W × 17 cm H (18.9ʺ × 6.7ʺ). Mounted with a 2 cm floating gap, ready to hang with pre-installed hardware. Displayed together as a matching pair, or separately as complementary accents.
