This pair of Chinese architectural openwork panels dates to circa 1920 — surviving fragments from a traditional timber-framed structure.
What makes these panels exceptional is the surface. The original mineral-based polychrome pigments have faded over a century, but they have not disappeared — they have soaked into the wood itself. This is not a surface treatment that can be replicated. It is a patina that only time could produce.
The wooden carvings on the building have survived for a century, retaining their original colors while also showing signs of wear and tear – the marks of time – and are suspended on the new back panel.
Each panel measures approximately 60cm wide and 18cm high. Mounted on 70cm × 30cm backplates with a 3cm floating gap, ready to hang. The pair can be displayed together or separately.
A truly one-of-a-kind pair — increasingly difficult to find in this size and with this quality of original pigment. Ideal for entryways, above a console, flanking a fireplace, or as a focal point in a living room.
