José Carvalho was born in Portugal and moved to London in 2006. In his work José likes to apply his interest in geometry. He has developed his own glazes, with particular success with volcanic glazes, giving his work organic texture.
José has exhibited his work in London in Chelsea Physic Gardens, Hepsibah Gallery, Holland Park Ice House and Es Bec d'Aguila. His work has sold worldwide and been used in projects by Conran and Partners, Soho House, Molteni&C, Colefax & Fowler, BWT London and Heckfield Place.
In 2017, José won two awards at the London Potters Association Exhibition: Best Use of Surface and Glaze awarded by Ceramics Review Magazine and Best in Show by Visitors’ choice. His work has also been mentioned in the international press.
He has been influenced by many potters, including Lucie Rie, Yuji Ueda, Bernard Leach and Grayson Perry.
José is a member of both the Craft Potters Association and London Potters.
