In retirement, he is a painter and exhibits abstract/primitive works at various galleries and art centers. He also publishes a weekly essay at thecolumnrule.com
He was named literary and visual artist of the year in Rockland County, N.Y., 2005 and 2010, respectively.
Gunther's painting approach is to mix dramatic acrylic colors and apply to wood, canvas and other media, blending and scraping for effect.
